Herschel Planck to understand the universe

Space astronomy missions take many years to prepare. But there comes a time when the spacecraft is practically ready and managers and scientists look forward to the launch and the start of observations.
ESA's next major scientific missions; HERSCHEL and PlANCK, have now reached that stage and the two spacecrafts are preparing for an ARIANE 5 launch early next year.
This A & B-Roll outlines the two missions which will both probe the invisible far infrared and microwave Universe. It includes interviews with their project manager Thomas Passvogel and project scientists Göran Pilbratt and Jan Tauber, and new 3D animations of the spacecraft.

At the European Space Agencyís Technical and Research Centre in the Netherlands, Project scientist Göran Pilbratt can now admire ëhisí spacecraft, the Herschel Space Observatory, to which engineers are putting the final touches.
      01:01:58
Herschel will be the largest telescope ever launched with a 3.5 metre mirror ñ seen covered here at the summit to avoid any contamination.
      01:02:09
Its advanced detectors will gather invisible radiation at far-infrared and sub-millimetre wavelengths, allowing scientists to learn more about the coldest regions of the Universe, to better understand how stars and galaxies formed, and how the structure of the Universe has changed.
      01:02:27
Herschel has a partner on its voyage up into space. Another space telescope, also in its final phase of preparation and pre-launch testing seen here at the Centre Spatial de Liège in Belgium. Likewise its main mirror is also under wraps.
